The New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) has published a new version of the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework (NZQCF), effective from 1 July 2025.

The framework remains the definitive reference for all quality-assured qualifications and micro-credentials across New Zealand.

The updated NZQCF maintains its core architecture while introducing key changes, including revised level descriptors that highlight vocational and transferable skills such as critical thinking and communication. Qualification type descriptions have been updated to align with these new outcomes.

The framework now more explicitly recognises mātauranga Māori, te ao Māori, te reo Māori, and Pacific knowledges, supporting a wider representation of New Zealand’s cultural heritage within qualifications.

Micro-credentials are included, allowing recognition of diverse learning pathways alongside traditional academic and vocational qualifications.

The NZQCF supports lifelong learning and provides clarity for learners, employers, and education providers about skills, knowledge, and progression opportunities.
